National Nurse-To-Patient Ratios
We’ve been quiet too long. It is past time to make a change for our patients and for ourselves. We need safe nurse:patient ratios and we need them NOW! Let’s make Flo proud!
We’ve all heard administration’s excuses: work smarter not harder, organize your time properly, you have nurse burnout. News Flash…it’s not us…it’s the environment in which we work. It is not our fault. It is the environment that we work in that is unconducive to rendering safe patient care. I have been in this profession for over 45 years and have heard the same complaints, frustrations and concerns over and over. Nurses, wake up! We can do something about it!
We are and have been abused…for a long time! Financially, economically, morally, ethically and physically! It is not OK for healthcare institutions to abuse you! Forms of abuse include:
- no lunch breaks or bathroom breaks
- forced to take an unsafe assignment
- threatened verbally, bullied
- being labeled a troublemaker or having a bad attitude if you speak out
- threatened with termination for telling patients the truth about unsafe nurse:patient rations
You have two choices: accept the conditions under which you work or accept the responsibility to change them. We cannot become what we want by remaining what we are!
If we get just 50 nurses from every hospital to sign this petition, that would add up to over 500,000 nurses! Ask your family, friends, church groups, and associations to sign the petition. Explain how vitally important safe nurse-to-patient ratios are for all of us! Unsafe staffing affects both them and their loved ones during hospitalization. Understaffing affects us all. If we can get one million signatures, congress will listen! We will have their attention to pass legislation that mandates safe nurse-to-patient ratios.
Sign this petition – for ourselves, our families, our patients, and for the future of nursing, so nurses will be able to practice nursing the way it should be practiced.
Let’s be able to pass the torch to a new generation of nurses – as we, the movers and the shakers, the patient advocates – build a better environment for rendering nursing care. Flo will be proud.
